What are the formats that are supported by MPEG-4 Visual?

MPEG-4 Video supports :

  • as Scanning Methods : progressive and interlaced.
  • as Luminance Spatial Resolutions : arbitrary sizes from 8*8 to 2048*2048, e.g. SQSIF/SQCIF, QSIF/QCIF, SIF/CIF, 4*SIF/CIF, and CCIR 601.
  • as Color Spaces : monochrome, Y, Cr, Cb, combined with an Alpha Channel (of same size as Y data).
  • as Chrominance Spatial Resolutions : 4:0:0, 4:2:0, 4:2:2.
  • as Temporal Resolutions : various resolutions with as maximum the capture rate. The frame rate shall be continuously variable, on a frame-by-frame basis.

These supported formats are given by the Requirements Group, and may still change in the future.
