Press release:

The Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) is operating in the framework of Working Group 8 of Subcommittee 2 of ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee 1 "Information Technology", with the mandate of developing standards for Coded Representation of Moving Images and Sound in combination for Digital Storage Media.

After about 18 months of activity, the Group met in Japan and successfully tested 15 proposals of video coding algorithms operating at a maximum bitrate of 1.5 Mbit/s and recognised basic similarities. At the same meeting audio experts substantially agreed on exploring 4 major technical options for coding stereo wideband audio at a total bitrate of 192-256 kbit/s.

Several technical groups are currently exploring different technical alternatives with the target of defining a Draft Proposal of Standard for Moving Images and Sound by September 1990.

The standard is expected to have a wide range of applications e.g. interactive video on CD-ROM, video on DAT as well as Digital Audio Broadcasting.

A U-matic video tape is available on request demonstrating the current state of moving image coding at 1.15 Mbit/s. Those interested should contact
