HDR Video Coding

This document defines common test conditions (CTC), conversion practices and software reference configurations to be used in the context of HDR/WCG video coding experiments after the 6th JVET meeting. These common test conditions are recommended for use in technical contributions to the 7th and following JVET meetings, as applicable.

This document is a working draft of a technical report on Signalling, Backward Compatibility and Display Adaptation for HDR/WCG Video Coding. This report complements and extends work in another report, "Conversion and Coding Practices for HDR/WCG Y′CbCr 4:2:0 Video with PQ Transfer Characteristics". Specifically, this report expands on the application of ICtCp, HLG, and SEI messages in the coding of high dynamic range and wide colour gamut (HDR/WCG) video.

This document is a proposed draft technical report that provides guidance on the processing of High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Wide Colour Gamut (WCG) video content. The purpose of this document is to provide a set of publicly referenceable recommended guidelines for the operation of AVC or HEVC systems adapted for compressing HDR/WCG video for consumer distribution applications.

This document reports results of a verification test of the encoding of HDR (High Dynamic Range) video content using the HEVC Main 10 profile, with and without the use of particular conversion and coding practices for HDR video coding that are under study in preparation of an upcoming technical report. The test was conducted according to the test plan described in JCTVC-W1018.

SHVC, the scalable form of HEVC, codes video data of different qualities into layers, and allows subsets of the layers of video data to be extracted and used on their own. Verification tests of SHVC have been conducted to evaluate the amount of savings that can be achieved by SHVC compared to HEVC simulcast, where video data of different qualities are separately coded into independent bitstreams using HEVC.

This proposed draft amendment to the HEVC standard adds support for ITU-T BT.[HDR-TV] to the standard, particularly including specifying a code point for ICtCp colour representation.

This working draft specifies an additional colour description indicator for HEVC, to indicate the use of the ICTCP colour representation as specified in the ITU-R Draft New Recommendation BT.[HDR-TV]. Text for some changes that are related to ITU-R BT.[HDR-TV] but are not specifically for the ICTCP colour representation are also included.

This proposed draft amendment provides additional video code points for ISO/IEC 23001-8. The additional video code points enable the expression of additional types of transfer characteristics, colour primaries, and matrix coefficients that are expected to become commonly used for future video applications.
