3D-HEVC

This document describes the results of the subjective quality assessment verification test for HEVC-based coding of multiview video and depth. A description of the test conditions and subjective testing methodology is also provided. The subjective test results show that 3D-HEVC can achieve comparable quality relative to MV-HEVC with approximately 20% less bit rate, on average.

This is a draft of an amendment to the HEVC reference software specification, providing draft text revisions and reference software implementing the 3D extension of the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) specification. Source code is provided in the attached zip archive, which supports the 3D Main profile of the standard.

3D video is represented using the Multiview Video plus Depth (MVD) format, in which a small number of captured views as well as associated depth maps are coded and the resulting bitstream packets are multiplexed into a 3D video bitstream. Optionally, the encoder can be configured in a way that a sub-bitstream representing two views without depth data can be extracted and independently decoded for displaying the 3D video on a conventional stereo display.
