The MPEG DRM vision

Purpose

Approved

The MPEG DRM vision

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) definition of Digital Rights Management (DRM) is: a system of Information Technology (IT) components and services along with corresponding law, policies and business models which strive to distribute and control Intellectual Property (IP) and its rights.

In the rest of this document the acronym DRM will not be used but Intellectual Management and Protection (IPMP). This is the MPEG name for DRM that is less ambiguous as IPMP explicitly separates Management from Protection.

MPEG has provided a range of IPMP-related standards since its early days because IPMP is an enabler of ways of doing business with digital media, as can be seen from the list below. Note that some MPEG IPMP standards can only be used for management of Intellectual Property, as protection is not a requirement for all application.
