Overview of DMB AF

The Digital Multimedia Broadcasting Application Format (DMB-AF) standard [1][2] specifies a file format that pertains to DMB (i.e., T-DMB, S-DMB, DAB, and DAB+) contents and services. It integrates the existing DMB contents with appropriate additional information to facilitate storage, interchange, management, editing, and presentation of the contents in protected, governed, and interoperable ways.

The main features of DMB-AF are summarized as follows:

• DMB-AF provides storage and playback of all kinds of DAB and DAB+ audio content even with its associated data such as dynamic label text and slideshow image.
• DMB-AF provides storage and playback of all kinds of T-DMB and S-DMB audio and video content as well as associated interactive data.
• DMA-AF provides storage and playback of timed text associated with the stored media data to enable karaoke-style presentation of the media.
• DMB-AF enables storing multiple contents in a file. For example, several video, a number of songs, and multiple JPEG pictures can be stored in a DMB-AF file.
• DMB-AF provides protection of DMB contents stored in DMB-AF files.
• DMB-AF provides usage management functionality to control usage rights such as permitted number of plays, valid play period, etc.
• DMB-AF provides protection of audio, video, and data contents stored in DMB-AF files. In addition, it also provides governed usage of the protected resources as well as the license management functionality.
• DMB-AF provides in the same file a various kinds of descriptions (e.g., title, genre, producer, rating, summary, etc.) on the content stored within a file, which can include links to the related external contents (e.g., contents in the Internet).
