Test sequences

This work plan was set up to explore characteristics of test sequences that were offered for usage in future video coding standardization. It is planned to evaluate picture quality of HM and JEM at approximately same bitrate for 4K sequences and 1080p sequences. The objective is to understand the characteristics of 4K/1080p test sequences and the coding performance difference between HM and JEM.

MPEG anticipates that video bit rate (with current compression technology is used) will go up faster than the network infrastructure will be able to carry economically in the future, both for wireless and wired networks. Reasons for this include the capability for higher quality ranges and resolution for both stationary and mobile devices, the increasing number of users, the increased consumption of video by each user, the increasing tendency towards individual download/upload/streaming.
