Local Transportation

Dresden has a large tramway network that is operated by the Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe AG/DVB (information only in German, information in English can be found here). The tramway system is the backbone of public transport in Dresden. On the major lines through the inner city, where different routes intertwine, vehicles run up to every two minutes. Different routes can be identified by a route number scheme, which also extends to local and regional bus services, as well as a colour code which has by now only been applied to the official network diagram of DVB.

Weather in April

Spring is a good time to visit Dresden. The nature awakes from it's winter sleep and everything is painted in a fresh green. However, with an average temparature of 15¡ãC, it can become fresh in the evening and you should always be prepared for a little rain.

Restaurants

It is a matter of course that solid Saxon dishes are offered in the capital of Saxony, but you should also enjoy the rare wines of the wine-growers from the surroundings, preferably in one of the romantic restaurants at the Elbe slopes. Radeberger beer - brewed nearby Dresden - probably tastes best in one of the many beer-gardens along the Elbe.

Baroque palaces in the Inner Neustadt quarter offer specialties from the neighbouring Bohemia and the alternative scene in the Outer Neustadt quarter invites you to a culinary journey around the world.

A list of some special restaurants will follow soon!

Frequently asked questions

Money

The local currency is the Euro. For current exchange rates you may see Oanda.
Major Credit Cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and shops.

Tipping

Unlike in some other countries, service staff is always paid by the hour (albeit not always that well). A tip is a matter of politeness and shows your appreciation. If you didn't appreciate the service (e.g. slow, snippy or indifferent service), reduce the tip accordingly or don't tip at all.
Since the introduction of the Euro, a tip (Trinkgeld, lit. "drink money") of about 5-10% is customary if you were satisfied with the service. Nonetheless, service charge is already included in an item's unit price so what you see is what you pay.

Tipping in Germany is usually done by mentioning the total while paying. So if eg. a waiter tells you the bill amounts to "€13.50", just state "15" and he will include a tip of €1.50.

Smoking

Smoking is not permitted within public buildings and is not permitted at all on public transport, including domestic air flights.

¡¡

Banking hours

The banks are open at least from 9:30am to 4pm Monday through Friday.
¡¡

Dresden inside

Dresden is the capital of the German federal state of Saxony (Freistaat Sachsen). Located on the Elbe River, it is an industrial, governmental, and cultural center, known worldwide for the Bruehl's Terrace and its historic landmarks in the Old Town (Altstadt). Although Dresden is larger than Munich when measured by area, the historic center is quite compact and walkable. Be sure to check out some of these places while in Dresden:
