What is 3DGC’s mission?

The broad rang of objectives addressed by MPEG include compression, support for service profiles designed for classes of applications, a wide range of channel bandwidths ranging from a few kbps to many Mbps , content-based access and manipulation, and scalability of Audio/Visual objects for different channels and terminal resources. Within this context, 3DGC’s main activities involve the compression of 3D graphics primitives (such as geometry, appearance models, animation parameters, etc.), the representation, coding and spatial-temporal composition of synthetic objects. In parallel to these activities, 3DGC is also involved in standardizing the coupling of the 3D compression tools developed within MPEG with other scene representation formats, which is treated in Part 25 of the MPEG-4 standard.
